Grand Light was recently given the task of creating custom candle lanterns and two different variations of matching pedestals for a client in Palm Beach, Florida. The custom lanterns and matching pedestals were to be installed alongside the in-ground pool of a luxurious waterfront 14th floor apartment.

The inspiration for the custom designed lanterns came from an existing lantern, which was modified slightly to meet the client's taste. The two sets of pedestals were unique designs which were crafted by incorporating the expertise of our custom lighting artisans with the specifications and sketches provided by the client. The lanterns and pedestals were to be constructed using 24-gauge copper and would be given a hand applied oil-rubbed bronze finish.

Drawings were made for the lantern as well as the two different types of pedestals, one of which would be square and the other rectangular. The creation of custom drawings was an important part of the project as they served as the blueprint for our production process.

Our drawings address the smallest of details, allowing our clients to fully visualize the fixture before it goes into production, which reduces the possibility of error, and allows Grand Light to fulfill its committment of delivering high-quality lighting fixtures on schedule.

The drawings specified important details such as:

  • Multiple Views
  • Dimensions of the Fixture
  • Type of Materials Being Used
  • Characteristics of Glass
  • Finish Options
  • And other important information
Following the approval of the drawings by the client, Grand Light's custom lighting artisans began the fabrication of a prototype lantern and pedestal.

The lantern was constructed using 24-gauge copper, and measured 10" x 10" x 18", as specified in the drawings. It was given a removable candle tray, hinged door, and clear glass panels. To give the lantern an antique feel, it was given a hand applied oil-rubbed bronze finish. The pedestal measured 12" x 12" x 28.5", and was given the same finish as the lantern.

Upon completion of the prototypes, it was decided that the dimensions of the candle cup would be increased to accommodate a larger candle than initially requested. This required a revision of the drawings, which was then resubmitted to our metal fabricators.

The remaining lanterns and pedestals were then fabricated according to the most recent revision of the custom drawings, and then given a hand applied oil-rubbed bronze finish.

With the raw copper fabrications of the lanterns and two sets of pedestals completed, each fixture was carefully given a hand applied oil-rubbed bronze finish. The frame was lacquered, the glass panels were carefully slipped into place, and the removable candle trays were packaged seperately to avoid damaging the glass during shipment.

Following a detailed inspection for structural integrity and approval for the quality of finish, the lanterns were carefully packaged to protect against any possible damage during shipment from Connecticut to Florida.

In the end, Grand Light's custom lighting team was proud of the fine craftmanship of the fixtures and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work on the project. In addition to the custom candle lanterns and pedestals, our artisans have created custom lighting fixtures of every style and for every application. Our team of specialists is comprised of professional metal workers and glass blowers whose mission is to create or re-create lighting fixtures of the utmost quality and authenticity.
