Recently, one of Grand Light's clients approached the restoration team with an antique lantern that was in need of preservation. The lantern, he said, was a family heirloom that had been passed down to him from his father, who was a World War II Navy Veteran. The lantern, which was made of cast bronze and had a verdi patina, came off the battleship his father had served on during the war.
Grand Light was asked to take the necesssary steps to preserve the lantern, as well as to modify it so that it could be hung from the wall of his home.
Upon receiving the lantern, Grand Light's artisans went straight to work finding the best way to modify the lantern. A custom bracket was fabricated out of cast aluminum, which was then given a powder-coated verdi finish to match the original patina of the fixture.
The fixture was then rewired according to modern UL standards, and then cleaned as necessary. The lantern then went through the same vigerous testing all fixtures go through before leaving our restoration and custom lighting facilities.
In the end, the client was truly satisfied with the work Grand Light's artisans had done to his lantern. The removable backplate allows him to modify the lantern in a way that would allow him to install the fixture how it was originally installed on the battleship should he ever chose to do so.
After the modification and preservation process, this World War II battleship lantern remains a piece truly worthy of heirloom status that will no doubt be passed down for years to come.
